The Blue Springs Downtown Alive! group is gaining speed, and Cindy Miller is in the front seat. The collection of civic leaders, business owners and just some regular old city folks have met and are on their way to becoming a legitimate and powerful voice in the effort to bring more life and business to the downtown corridor.
The group just had their first meeting on Monday and are planning on more. Those wanting more information about the group should visit www.bluespringsgov.com and click on “downtown revitalization.”
Why did you decide to volunteer your time for the Downtown Alive! group?
I attended the meetings when the informal group was in its early stages back in 2010. It didn’t take me long to figure out there was a fresh perspective and a new energy, and I wanted to be a part of the excitement. I am very proud to be president of Downtown Alive! and to have the opportunity to work with such a great group of people.
What is the importance of volunteers in the Downtown Alive! effort?
Our group is 100 percent volunteer based. We are all working together toward one common cause and that is to improve our downtown and return vitality to the heart of Blue Springs. A group is only as strong as its volunteers, and when the volunteer base is many, the group is bound to flourish and succeed.
What gratification do you get from volunteering?
Volunteering gives me a personal sense of accomplishment and pride, no doubt. When you volunteer you can’t help but feel more positive about life in general. But even more than personal satisfaction, I believe it’s important to give back to others and to your community. Volunteering is a personal choice!

How can others volunteer in the downtown effort?
We welcome anyone who has interest in helping our efforts with as much or as little participation as your time allows. Volunteering to help create a vibrant downtown benefits the entire community.
What critical areas need filled in the downtown effort, and who should they contact to get started?
Our Organization Team is working on our by-laws and establishing our 501(c)(3), so professional help in that area would be appreciated. The other teams (design, promotions and economic restructuring) are also in need of volunteers. Anyone interested in helping Downtown Alive! can contact me or any downtown merchant. We’d love to have you!
