The Independence Kiwanis Club celebrated its 80th anniversary Sept. 29 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence. The club was chartered on Oct. 3, 1929.  Former President Harry S. Truman was a charter member. 
Incoming President Tawna Noftzger announced the theme for the upcoming year will be “Sharing a Legacy-Inspiring a New Generation to Service. Her acceptance speech challenged club members and guests to leave a legacy of community service. 
Mayor Don Reimal presented a proclamation to the club for its 80th celebration and congratulated club members on their dedication to children’s projects and for supporting many nonprofit organizations in Independence.
The 2009-10 officers in addition to Noftzger and Michael Hahn as immediate past-president will be Brian Yarbrough, president-elect, Robert Haas, vice president, Dan Jeffers, recording secretary, and Duane Lewis, treasurer. The board of directors will be Ron Byers, Judy Luffman, Sandy Naylor, Kay Van Fleet, Barbara Langley, Diane Montgomery, and Gary Rohrs. Sue Ridings will be special adviser to the president. Kiwanis Lt. Governor Don Coffman installed the new board and officers.
Entertainment was by Stage Illusions by Clowns of Faith presented by Randy Harbin. Members and guests were asked to dress in Roaring Twenties costumes. A first place prize was given to Silvia Barrios, Old Mexico Restaurant, for best flapper outfit. She received a one-night stay from the Hilton Garden Inn. 
Two tables were filled with Kiwanis memorabilia including copies of Harry Truman’s Kiwanis membership cards, trophies, newspaper articles, photos and tributes to past members, Ed Sheldon, Ken Taylor, Clay Snowden, and Ray Van Jones.
