1 ‘Weed and Seed.’ The Independence Police Department substation in Englewood is the focus of “Weed and Seed” efforts. “It’s an office where we focus on community-orientated problem-solving,” said Officer Rob Romey, one of two officers assigned there. It’s at 10920 E. Winner Road. Phone: 816-325-7643.

2 Englewood location. The substation originally was in Fairmount but closed when federal grant money ran out. Residents and business owners in Fairmount, Maywood, Englewood and elsewhere in northwest Independence rallied and got it moved to the Englewood site. Over the years, it’s become well known in the community. “It’s kind of a beacon where you can go,” said Fred Mills, a former Independence police chief and board member of the Northwest Community Development Corp. in Fairmount.

3 Barbecue benefit. A barbecue dinner is held annually for the substation. “The agreement is that the community pays the rent,” said Donna Pittman of Curt’s Famous Meats on Truman Road in Maywood, where this year’s event was held Thursday evening. The group raised more than $5,000 toward its goal of $6,000, the amount needed to cover the rent.
