 The following items were taken from the Jan. 19 through 25, 1963, Examiner.

  • The city has received a check for $187,500 from the federal government as repayment of money spent on the new sewage treatment plant near Sugar Creek. Mayor L.F.P. Curry signed the check and presented it to John D. McEnroe, acting city director.
  • A former University of Kansas track standout is the new program secretary of the Eastern Jackson County branch of the YMCA. Kent Floerke was appointed by YMCA director Leonard Eble to succeed Charles Finter, who resigned to accept a position in Springfield, Ill.
  • The Girl Scout cookie sale is under way to finance the outdoor program at Camp Prairie Schooner. Mrs. Ruth Pennell, 1409 W. Scott Place, a kindergarten teacher at Ott School, was the organizer of the first Girl Scout troop in Independence in 1930.
  • Jerry Mershon, a 32-year-old farmer, received the Jaycee Outstanding Young Farmer in Jackson County. Mershon, a former Missouri football player and a 1952 MU graduate, currently farms 800 acres near Buckner and is a trustee of the Buckner Methodist Church.
  • A fund for scholarships in the University of Missouri School of Journalism in memory of Miss Besse Marks, a native of Independence, has been established with a gift to the University from members of her family. She graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1923 and followed an active career in her chosen field.
