Entering prime season for severe weather, the city of Oak Grove is getting ready.

The Oak Grove Board of Aldermen, in a brief meeting Monday, approved an ordinance that will add a storm siren on the west side of the city.

The new siren will provide better coverage for the Oaks of Edgewood and Edgewood Estates and Edgewood Villas.

The storm siren and 55-foot concrete pole will cost $24,509, which the city will pay for in two separate purchases, according to city administrator Steven Craig. The purchase was a budgeted item.

A crew on Monday did a survey of the siren site, which is on an existing city easement,  just northwest of the Oaks of Edgewood Community Center.

City staff will purchase for the siren today. They will get the pole after the siren, and the storm siren should be fully operational in about a month.

The city will maintain the storm siren.

Also on Monday, Craig said he was disappointed in lower-than-expected sales tax receipts. Sales tax money so far this year is down 7.15 percent from this point last year, from $118,501 to $110,033. Sales tax receipts each month in 2010 decreased.

It’s disappointing to Craig because he expected higher numbers because of the opening of north Broadway and the finished roadwork in that area.  The meeting was over in less than an hour.
