Independence, MO —

Resident artist, retailer, designer and businessman Russ Lawrence has once again struck gold in Englewood with the success of Green Dog Gallery located in a historic storefront on Winner Road.
Conceptualizing the type of studio/exhibit space that is familiar in artists’ communities nationwide, Lawrence adapted the former Cauger building to accommodate artists seeking a location to create and show art.
Visitors to Green Dog have the experience of watching artists of various media at work while browsing the gallery space.
The mastermind behind Changing Seasons Gift Gallery and Flowers and the Englewood Botanical Garden, Lawrence has established himself as the engine behind Englewood’s revitalization on the city’s northwest side. Next on his list of endeavors is a coffee shop for the neighborhood.
Always yielding to his artist’s soul, Lawrence has planned additional studio space on the premises.
Each year Lawrence organizes a toy drive named for his late mother. The “Janie’s Toys” project collects games, toys, dolls, sports equipment and much more for foster children living in our communities.
Growing up in foster care until his adoption, Lawrence has a heart for young people who may find themselves displaced and without a gift from Santa. In fact, Green Dog was named for a favored toy of Lawrence’s childhood which remained his constant as he transitioned through the foster care system.
His regard for children will once again be in evidence this summer as Lawrence hosts a youth art camp on Aug. 15 at the gallery. Students kindergarten age and above are invited to participate in the one-day instructional and creative camp. Kids will interact with professional artists, learn techniques, and let their imaginations run wild as they work on individual and group projects.
At the end of the session the artwork will be professionally exhibited on the gallery walls.
Campers will also participate in a group project, creating a piece that requires the children’s collaboration and cooperation.
Lawrence is currently seeking a space to display the completed piece so that the community can enjoy and appreciate the creation of these young artists.
