A winter storm watch is up for most of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, as well as parts of five other states in advance of a heavy winter storm expected to hit the Kansas City area late Wednesday, possibly making for treacherous driving Thursday.
The National Weather Service says there’s a 100 percent chance of snow Wednesday night. After 5 a.m. Thursday, sleet could start mixing in, and the area could get one to three inches of accumulated snow and sleet.
Snow, freezing rain and sleet are then expected until around 2 p.m., then just snow until 3, then a chance of snow and freezing drizzle until around 11 p.m., but the amount coming down is expected to lessen sharply.
The heaviest snow in the state is expected generally north of U.S. 36, which runs through St. Joseph, Cameron and Chillicothe. The heaviest ice accumulations are expected south of U.S. 50. The area in between – including most of Eastern Jackson County – should look for snow, sleet and freezing rain.
It’ll be cold, too: 14 tonight, a high of 34 Wednesday and then 24 overnight, then 32/21 Thursday. Friday and the weekend bring a return to sunnier skies. Highs in the low 30s Friday and Saturday – but 47 Sunday.
