The city of Independence is warning about a phone scam.

The city’s Utilities Customer Service staff reported four customers receiving telephone calls from a person purporting to be a city utilities representative, asking for personal information, including a credit card number, to pay their unpaid utility bill, saying they would be disconnected if they did not provide it.

The city does not ask for personal information over the telephone.

Anyone who receives such a call should not answer the questions and should call the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7330.
