By this time next week, an Independence teenager will know if she gets to compete for the National Youth of the Year title with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Akimmy Wheeler, a May graduate of William Chrisman High School, will compete Tuesday and Wednesday in Chicago in the 13-state Midwest regional competition of the Boys & Girls Club. In April, Wheeler was named the 2012 Missouri Youth of the Year, several months after she had secured the title of Youth of the Year for the Kansas City area of five Boys & Girls Clubs. She attends the Hawthorne Unit in Independence.
This fall, Wheeler plans to attend Park University, majoring in interior design and psychology.
