The following items were taken from the July 7 through 13, 1962, Examiner.

The United States successfully rocketed the world’s first international communications satellite, Telstar, into orbit July 10 in an effort to open a new era of global radio and “live” television. Circling the earth every two hours and 38 minutes as a “switchboard in the sky,” Telstar was expected to bring a future in which radio and television programs will be relayed around the world by space stations.

Championship ribbons were recently presented to members of the Peacedale 4-H Club. The 4-H’ers showed their projects for the year. The winners are: Land conservation, Bob Bohnert; swine, champion gilt, Bonnie Blystone; championship boar, Pam Higgins; junior yearling heifer, Clint Shrout; steer, Bob Bohnert; heifer, Bonnie Blystone; and bull, Pam Higgins.

Seven young men have enlisted in the Air Force as a Buddy Group, they are Earnest Cecil, son of Mrs. Leona Smith; Dave Forbes, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.T. Forbes; Bob Lane, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Lane; Charles Merriott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Merriott; Jerry Cantrell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roe T. Cantrell; Stan Prusacki, son of Mrs. Leonard Sagehorn; and Roger Mort, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Mort.

Dr. Vance E. Link, M.D., was honored as the Optimist of the Year by the Independence Optimist Club. Dr. Link has been active in working with a boys’ rifle club, a branch of the National Rifle Association. A charter member of the local Optimist Club, Dr. Link has held numerous office, including vice president and board member. The Independence Optimist Club was founded in February 1947.
