The following items were taken from the July 7 through 13, 1912, Examiner.
W.L. Roney, the Federal veteran of Marquette, Kan., is raising funds to place a monument for the Federal dead at the Lone Jack battle ground. In a letter to the Pleasant Hill Times Mr. Roney says, “I propose to put up a monument at Lone Jack before the 16th of August. Nearly a year ago I promised myself that, if life and health continued with me, I would have the monument on the ground by that time, which will be 50 years since the fight.” “I was a Missouri soldier for four years during the war and can give a very correct account of what happened in the state during that time.”

In August, Missouri Democrats will nominate a candidate for governor and a full set of state officials. The only contest will be for the nomination for governor and the two men who are leading candidates, Hon. Wm. S. Cowherd of Kansas City and Elliott W. Major of Pike County. Mr. Cowherd has served in Jackson County as prosecuting attorney, in Kansas City as mayor, and in the Congress as the representative from the Fifth Missouri District.

A blacksmith shop at 135 E. Lexington was totally destroyed by fire. The building was owned by O.A. Moeller. The cause is unknown. The building burned very rapidly, and the flames soon spread to a two story residence west of it, which is used as a negro boarding house.

The suggestion made by Mrs. J.G. Paxton that the city of Independence establish a public swimming pool has received much attention and favorable comment. Independence has no public place of park nature whatever. Independence boys and girls have no place where the art of swimming can be learned. It has been suggested to build a Convention Hall, a Y.W.C.A. and Y.M.C.A. with a swimming pool in the basement, all under one roof. Have certain days for the public to use the pool, and allotted time for Y.W.C.A. and Y.M.C.A. members to use it.
