The National Weather Service says today is likely to be the first of several in a row with the return of 100-degree heat – including a 105-degree day on Thursday.
The relative humidity remains low, so the heat index is not much higher than the actual temperature. The Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for much of eastern Missouri but so far has not posted one for the metro area. Officials begin to warn about the effects on human health when the heat index is expected to reach 105.
Still, the forecast calls for six straight days of 100 or higher: 101 this afternoon and again Wednesday, 105 on Thursday, 101 Friday and Saturday and then 102 Sunday. The forecast posted late this morning runs through Monday, with a high of 99. If it hits 105 Thursday, that would tie for the hottest day of the year so far. It was also that hot on July 7, the last day of a five-day run with highs of 100 or more.
There is no rain in the forecast, and many parts of the metro have had no rain for more than three weeks.
