Several 100-degree days in a row are expected, and the National Weather Service has posted an excessive heat warning for the metro area.
The warning begins at noon Wednesday and runs through 8 p.m. Saturday for six counties: Jackson, Clay, Platte, Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson. A far wider area is under a heat advisory, but officials point out that urban areas suffer more because all of the buildings, tar roofs and asphalt streets collect heat during the day and release it slowly overnight, so temperatures don’t fall as much and that sets the stages for temperature to spike the next day.
It reached 100 this afternoon Kansas City International Airport, and more is coming: 101 Wedneday, 102 Thursday, 101 Friday, 99 Saturday, then 101 Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, according to the Weather Service.
When it’s this hot, officials recommend drinking lots of water, staying indoors when you can and finding shade when outdoors. It’s good idea to put off mowing or other stenuous work outdoors. If you do work outdoors, try for early in the morning or late in the evening.
