In the recent weeks, the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District has had a number of fires related to smoking and open flame devices such as BBQ grills due to the extreme dry and hot weather.
As a result, CJC is reminding residents and visitors to please be aware of any actions that could result in a fire.
If you live in a multi-family residence within one of CJC's protected communities, it is illegal to use an open flame device on the deck, or within 10 feet of the building, per the International Fire Code, section 308.3, adopted by all of the those CJC communities. Your local police department and CJC will enforce this to the fullest extent.
It is advised to not use even a gas grill on the deck of any residence, but if you do, please make sure all connections and hoses are intact and in good shape. If not, gas can leak out and ignite the grill and surrounding materials. Keep your grill away from the house siding.
If you smoke on your deck, please use a metal can with water and dispose of all ashes and cigarette butts in the can of water. Even the smallest of ashes or sparks can smolder and ignite.
If you have even the smallest fire, call 911. No fire is too small for us to check and we are trained to spot things that you may miss. Fires that appear out can smolder and reignite much later. Let us help.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District at 816-229-2522.
