A Kansas City man has been charged in the home invasion and shooting of an Independence man on Friday night.
Juan Hayes, 19, was charged with first-degree assault and burglary, as well as two counts of armed criminal action, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office.
According to court documents, Hayes told police he went to the home in the 9800 block of Winner Road late on July 13 to burglarize it with two other men. Hayes and another man rang the bell.
Hayes said he heard the victim say to get out, then he heard a shot. The two men fled, and a witness said he saw the two men, one of them Hayes, run out of the house and into a dark green Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a juvenile.
Police found the victim shot in the face. His cell phone was taken by the intruders. His condition was listed as critical on Monday, though it was unknown Wednesday.
The three suspects were later found in Kansas City and taken into custody. The juvenile had the victim’s cell phone on his person. All of them had warrants for arrests, according to court documents.
Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 cash and the incident remains under investigation.
