Cat adoption fees are reduced Friday at the Independence Animal Shelter.

The adoption fees will be $20 off, making prices for cats ranging from free to $29-$79. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for adoptions at 875 S. Vista Ave.

Jennifer Polston, Independence Animal Services supervisor, said only one business – Daft Crafts on the Square – has partnered with the shelter to date for its Mews About Town program to increase the chances of adoptions to families who may not go to an animal shelter.

Polston also said black animals, both cats and dogs, are often overlooked when patrons visit to take home a new forever friend.

“I don’t think it has anything to do with superstition, but maybe with bad lighting in the shelters and the inability for the animals to show their true personality, other animals draw the attention of adopters and win their hearts before the black dogs or cats have a chance,” she said.
