Independence city officials report that this summer, the Independence Water Plant is experiencing extensive and rare water demands.

From June 30 to July 6, the plant pumped out 292.4 million gallons, or about 41.8 million gallons per day. According to the city, this is a 28 percent increase compared to the same period in 2011.

Through this past Sunday, the city has continued to see the high usage, by averaging 40.9 million gallons per day in July.
