A 65-year-old Independence man has been charged in the shooting and stabbing attack of a Kansas City woman.
Edward D. Valdepena faces two counts of first-degree domestic assault and three counts of armed criminal action.
Independence police said Valdepena set fire to his home in the 14000 block of East 40th Street at about 10 a.m. Thursday before driving to Kansas City where his ex-wife lived in a home in the 9000 block of McGree Street.
Arriving in Kansas City, Valdepena then drove a rented truck into the house where his ex-wife was staying, according to court documents.
Kansas City police responded to the home after reports of shots fired were phoned in, and police found witnesses providing medical treatment to the victim.
The victim, who is 60, had been shot in the stomach and the shooter was still inside, she told police. A witness nearby who had seen the defendant drive a vehicle into the residence told police he heard gunshots, went into the residence and kicked open the rear door. He saw the victim covered in blood and then saw the defendant. The neighbor held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000 cash.
The victim’s condition is unknown.
