There's a second straight ozone alert day Sunday in the metro area.

The air quality rating is orange, meaning health concerns for those with asthma and similar conditions. Ozone concentrations are elevated and people are advised to drive less, delay mowing the law and not fuel their vehicles under after sundown. On ozone alert days, IndeBus and KCATA bus fares are 75 cents.

Sunday also is forecast to be one of the hottest days of the year so far, with a high of 103. That would fall short of the record, 106, set in 1901.

The area remains under an excessive heat warning through 7 p.m. Wednesday, so officials advise residents to stay inside when possible, drink plenty of water and check on friends, family and neighbors, particularly the elderly. Make sure outdoor pets have plenty of shade and fresh water.

Any outdoor exercise or strenuous outdoor work should be done early in the morning or late in the evening. Mowing or other use of gas-powered equipment is discouraged anyway because of the ozone alert.

The heat wave continues for several days, with highs of 103 Monday, 102 Tuesday, 101 Wednesday. Thursday brings a high of 97 – and a 30 percent chance of rain.
