As of Monday, no one has yet to file for candidacy for the vacant Independence City Council at-large seat.
July 31 marked the first day for filing nominating positions in the city clerk’s office. Nominating petitions must be filed by 5 p.m. Aug. 17, and the deadline to withdraw as a candidate is by 5 p.m. Aug. 24.
If two or fewer candidates successfully complete the filing process, a special general election will take place on Nov. 6. The winner of that election will be sworn in at the Nov. 19 meeting.
However, if more than two people successfully complete the filing process, Nov. 6 will serve as a special primary election, with the general election taking place on Feb. 5, 2013. If the February general election is necessary, the newly elected at-large council member will be sworn in at the Feb. 19, 2013, meeting.
Lucy Young resigned her at-large council position last month, leaving a vacant seat on the council.
