The Grain Valley Assistance Council is short of food and asking for the community’s immediate help.
The group served 83 families in July – including 10 new families – and gave out more than 4,000 food items. Case manager Mary Strack said the shelves are close to empty.
“It’s just gone,” she said Monday. “We have food drives, yes, but it doesn’t last.”
The Assistance Council is asking for help in a couple of ways:
• Bring items to today’s Grain Valley Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon. That’s from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Acquaint Gathering, 512 Capelle St.
• On Wednesday, drop off items between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Assistance Council’s site at the First Baptist Church, 207 W. Walnut.
Strack can be reached at the Assistance Council’s office at 816-355-0328. She’s there on Wednesdays.
Others in the community are helping get the word out, too. The Chamber of Commerce sent an email to members on Monday. Adams Dairy Bank put up an appeal – “canned food like soups, canned meats, vegetables, non perishable items. Let’s support our neighbors in need!” – on its Facebook page.
The Assistance Council also is busy getting back-to-school items in the hands of students and parents and has served about 180 children.
Strack has been the case manager for 16 years.
“It’s the first time,” she said, “I can remember the pantry being this low.”
