While sitting in a staff meeting, the funeral directors of Charter Funerals talked about the recent movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colo.
The shooting, which occurred July 20 just a few miles from where the Columbine High School shootings happened more than a decade ago, left 12 people dead and another 58 injured.
“We wanted to come up with a way to show support for the families and the victims,” said Jim Radovich, with Charter Funerals. “This sort of falls right on our doorstop as funeral directors. One of the ways we felt people could show their support was to have the ability to sign their name and leave a heartfelt message.”
Charter Funerals has organized a sympathy campaign that will visit all of the areas the business serves. Memorial banners will be provided at Charter Funerals’ four locations in Missouri and Kansas, including in Independence.
A memorial banner will be on display at the Independence Hy-Vee, 4545 S. Noland Road. People will have the opportunity to sign the banner and leave a message for the families in Aurora to read. The banner will be at Hy-Vee through today and will then be taken to Independence’s Night Out Against Crime event at 5 to 8 tonight on the Square at the corner of North Liberty Street and West Maple Avenue.
After the event, it will join banners from Gladstone, Mo., Emporia, Kan., and Great Bend, Kan., and will be mailed to the mayor of Aurora. Radovich said he hopes the community sees how important the need is to support the victims of the theater shooting.
“One of the things the victims’ families have said is that we need to remember the people injured or who are gone, not place focus on the shooter,” he said. “This is one of the ways we can show our support for the families and shift the focus.”
