Members of the United We Ride Chapter of Kansas City will host the fourth annual Freedom Ride June 30 in Independence.

The ride, to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and LiveStrong, begins at 7 a.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings, 20110 E. Jackson Drive. Cyclists of all ages and abilities can participate in the courses, which start at 20-mile distances and span up to 100 miles.

This year, the Freedom Ride will be dedicated to fellow cyclist, Chris Smedley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Owner of the Bike Shack in Kansas City, Smedley was an avid rider and friend to many in Eastern Jackson County community.

The Freedom Ride begins in Independence and offers options ranging from 1 to 22 miles on Little Blue Trace Trail or 35 to 100 miles of area country roads. The road route takes cyclists through Independence, Sibley, Buckner, and Wellington. Unique rest stops included for riders are Sibley Orchard and La Bella Winery. Former Chiefs punter Louie Aguiar is participating in his second year on the ride.

Registration prior to the event is $25. The cost is $35 the day of the event. Proceeds will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer and LiveStrong Foundation. Visit www.alexslemonade.org/campaign/freedom-cancer-ride for more information and to register.
