An orange alert for Kansas City's air quality has been posted for a second straight day.

The Mid-America Regional Council posted an alert for today, and this afternoon it posted one for Monday.

It's supposed to be somewhat cooler Monday – with a high of 93 compared with 98 just before 4 this afternoon – but there's enough ozone around for the air quality advisory. Authorities advise driving less, taking public transportation, not mowing the lawn or using other gas-powered yard machinery, and avoiding filling up your vehicle with gas until at least sundown. Rides on The Metro bus system are reduced to 75 cents on ozone alert days.

The elevated levels of ozone can cause a range of breathing problems, especially for the young and those with conditions such as asthma. This is the third ozone alert day so far in 2012.

In addition, the National Weather Service has a heat advisory in effect until 8 this evening, so people are advised to stay indoors or at least find shade and take it easy of they're outdoors. A wave of cooller air is expected late this evening. No advisory is up for Monday, but highs in the high 90s are expected to return by mid-week.
