The Independence Salvation Army community center is opening its doors for people who need a break from the extreme heat.

The Independence center, at 14700 E. Truman Road, is one of eight Salvation Army community centers across the Kansas City metro area, and all are being activated as community Cooling Shelters.

They will remain open while the excessive heat warning is in effect. The centers will be open from 8 a.m. to at least 5 p.m. including weekends until the excessive heat warning is canceled.

They will provide cold drinks and light snacks to anyone seeking respite from the heat.

Other metro Salvation Army community centers are:
6111 East 129th St., Grandview
3013 East 9th St., Kansas City
6618 East Truman Rd., Kansas City
5306 N. Oak Trafficway, Kansas City
500 West 39th St., Kansas City
6723 State Avenue, Kansas City, Kan.
420 East Santa Fe, Olathe, Kan.

A Salvation Army crew also will distribute cold drinks to the homeless and others enduring the extreme heat outside. The team will load up an emergency disaster vehicle each morning this week, handing out bottles of water and Gatorade to anyone in need.

Salvation Army volunteers are also making phone calls to elderly people throughout the metro area to check on their welfare.

In extreme weather, The Salvation Army Independence Crossroads Shelter provides emergency shelter to people who need a place to stay overnight. If needed, the shelter will set up cots inside the neighboring Salvation Army Independence Community Center to accommodate any overflow.

The Salvation Army also distributes fans to those in need, as well as air conditioners to people with medical conditions.
