The ozone alert for the metro area that's been up most of the week has been extended through Friday.
Active children and adults with those with respiratory diseases such as asthma are advised to avoid prolonged exertion outdoors. Also, to avoid making the ground-level air pollution worse, residents are advised to not mow or use other gas-powered lawn equipment and avoid filling up cars with gas until after sundown. The vapors released when filling up mix with air and sunlight to create more smog.
This comes against the backdrop of an excessive heat warning from the National Weather Service with highs at or near 100 for the next several days.
