Another significant discussion surrounding the future of Rockwood Golf Club could take place Monday evening.

Three people – Peggy McGuire, Patrick Cierpiot and Curtis Manley – are signed up to speak during the citizen comment time at the Independence City Council meeting.

Requests to speak had to be submitted to the city clerk’s office by noon Friday, although the three speakers are under no obligation to speak Monday night. Sometimes, citizens withdraw their request to speak after visiting about their concerns with city staff.

Earlier this week, after meeting in executive session, the City Council announced it was putting its support behind the Independence School District and its plans to possibly purchase Rockwood Golf Club for a future elementary school and golf course for high school team practice.

Rockwood has received significant discussion, especially among western Independence residents, since the June 14 town hall meeting in which several hundred people packed the auditorium at Korte Elementary School. The historic golf club is closed, and neighbors are concerned that it may possibly be sold for the use of high-density residential purposes.

The City Council meeting starts at 6 p.m. inside the council chambers at City Hall, 111 E. Maple Ave. Those who are unable to attend may watch the meeting live online, www.indepmo.org, or on City 7.
