The city of Independence Water Department wants to warn residents about a telephone scam.
On Tuesday, Utilities Customer Service staff said an Independence resident reported a telephone call from a man identifying himself as a city of Independence utilities representative, asking for personal information, including a credit card number, to pay the resident’s unpaid utility bill, stating the resident would be disconnected if the information wasn’t provided. The city of Independence, including its departments, does not request personal information by telephone.
Anyone who receives such a call should not answer any of the questions and should contact the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7330.
