The city of Independence is seeking nominations for the 15th annual Susan Paxton Block Distinguished Public Service Award.

Nomination forms are due Aug. 17. They are available from Melanie Goodson, a Junior Service League past president; City Hall; and at the Independence Chamber of Commerce, 210 W. Truman Road. Forms also may be printed from the city’s website (www.indepmo.org).

Anyone may nominate a city employee, volunteer or elected official who has demonstrated outstanding public service, valor and job performance with leadership.

Completed forms should be mailed to the JSL, 3122 S. Crysler Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Block was a member and a past president of the JSL.

Block represented the third City Council district from 1992 until her death on Nov. 11, 1996. Her father, the late Bill Paxton, established the award to honor his daughter’s memory and to recognize individuals who demonstrate excellence while conducting city business.

A selection committee, consisting of local service club presidents, will choose the award winner.

The award is $1,000, plus a sterling silver medallion and a sterling silver lapel pin. The award will be announced and will be given during the Sept. 17 City Council meeting. Sept. 24 as Block’s birth date.

Call Goodson at 816-916-2802 for more information.
