Independence police made 12 DWI arrests overnight Friday and into early Saturday  during a sobriety watch.

A checkpoint in the area of Noland Road and 32nd Street was in conjunction with a DWI saturation patrol that focused on railroad crossings in the city.

The saturation patrol began at 10 p.m. and continued until 4 a.m. Saturday, and the checkpoint was from 1 to 2:30 a.m. Saturday, with 21 officers involved in all.

The Union Pacific Police Department joined with Independence officers to target the 14 UP rail crossings in the city. That was an effort to reduce grade crossing collisions caused by intoxicated drivers. Independence has experienced one fatal crash involving an intoxicated driver and a Union Pacific train in the last year.

In all, 112 cars were checked at the checkpoint and 30 cars were stopped during the saturation patrol with the following arrests and citations:

12  DWI Arrests
19  Hazardous Moving Violations
  5  No Valid Driver License
15  Other Traffic Violations
17  Warrant Arrests
  2  Drug Arrests
  5  Other Arrests
