Lee's Summit, MO —
Kellie Smith, a social studies teacher at Bernard Campbell Middle School, was named Missouri Lottery Star in the Classroom for the Dec. 2 Kansas City Chiefs game against the Carolina Panthers for her excellence in the field of education. She was nominated by Susanne Mitko, also a Bernard Campbell teacher as well as a former Missouri Teacher of the Year.
Through the recognition, Smith received two tickets, a parking pass and pre-game passes for the football game. She was honored during the game, receiving a certificate and appearing on ArrowVision and the Chiefs in-stadium video boards.
The following public-service announcement was also broadcast during the game –
“Today’s Missouri Lottery Star in the Classroom is Kellie Smith, an eighth-grade history teacher from Campbell Middle School in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Kellie Smith has taught in eighth grade American history in the Lee’s Summit School District for the last 18 years. Through creative lessons that bring American history alive, Smith encourages an appreciation of our past while instilling the importance of good citizenship. Whether having students symbolize the difference between the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution using paper clips or re-enacting a 19th century factory setting, Smith engages her students and helps them reach their learning potential. She is a team leader in the use of the latest technology to develop creative lessons that reach all students including those in advanced classes and as well as students with special needs. A leader among her peers, Kellie is a department chair and develops curriculum for her district.”
