With a week left of voting, an Independence Parks and Recreation project aiming for $25,000 in grant funding is inching closer to threshold it needs to meet.

As of Thursday morning, Independence was in 47th place among 100 projects across the United States, but it still needs to reach the top 40 to receive the funding provided by the State Farm insurance company.

The proposed project, “Play With No Boundaries” at McCoy Park, would provide special-needs children a space to play and enjoy time with their families and friends.

Voting on Facebook opened April 27 and will close on May 17. Visit the Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/#!/IndependenceParksandRecreation) for more information on how to vote. Each Facebook user may vote up to 10 times each day.

The 5,100-square-foot playground would feature specially engineered swings, slides and a jungle gym, and almost all of the features would be handicapped accessible.

Independence was one of 3,000 total causes submitted and was selected as one of the 100 finalists. Forty projects will each receive $25,000 in funding. The winners will be announced on May 22.
