A cigarette in the mulch in front of the Comfort Inn in Blue Springs led to the fire that destroyed it Friday afternoon.
Ed Saffell, assistant fire chief with the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District, said Saturday morning the cigarette was in the mulch in front of the building. At some point, it was swept up into the wall and eventually ignited it, traveling into the attic, Saffell said.
The fire consumed the building and firefighters from at least three departments fought the fire for four hours.
Occupants within 19 rooms were evacuated and were safe. There were no reported injuries.
