There’s only a little more than a day to go, but this could still maybe be snowiest February on record in Kansas City.

The National Weather Service says the most February snowfall in 125 years of record keeping was 20.7 inches in 1960. As of noon today, 20.5 inches had been recorded at Kansas City International Airport. There’s a slight chance of snow through this evening.

The two major snowfalls of the last week also have been top 10 events for February. The biggest February snowfall was 11.8 inches on Feb. 27, 1900, followed by 10.5 inches on Feb. 25, 1993. Last Thursday’s snowfall, at 9.2 inches, is the fifth heaviest, and this week’s – 8.4 inches – is seventh.

Last winter, of course, was the least snowy on record for Kansas City, with just 3.9 inches. This winter, at 24.1 inches, has exceeded the average of 18.8 inches, but it’s only the 39th highest on the all-time list. The winter of 1911-12 brought 67 inches of snow. A couple in recent memory at in the top 10: 2009-10, 44.3 inches at No. 4 and 2010-11, 36.3 inches – including 8.9 inches in the Feb. 1 blizzard – at No. 9.

The Weather Service says there’s no snow in the forecast for the next week once today’s flurries end. Highs will generally be in the low to mid-30s, with lows in the teens to mid-20s.
