The city of Independence is warning residents and business owners of a telephone scam.

According to Utilities Customer Service staff, two local businesses have reported receiving a telephone call from a person identifying himself as a city of Independence utilities representative. The individual then asked for personal information, including a credit card number, to pay for the businesses' unpaid utility bill, stating the customers would be disconnected if they did not provide it.

The city of Independence, including all of its departments, does not ask for personal information by telephone. The city is asking anyone who receives a similar call to not answer any of the questions and to call the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7330.
