Blue Springs junior running back Dalvin Warmack was named the winner of the 30th annual Thomas A. Simone Award, which is given to the top football player in the metro area.
“ … When I walked in the gym and saw all the people I knew. It was just an unbelievable moment in my life,” Warmack said.
Joining Warmack as finalists for the award were Fort Osage’s Steven McBee, Staley’s Trent Hosick and Lawrence High School’s Brad Strauss.
Elijah Lee, a junior defensive end for Blue Springs, won the Buck Buchanan Award as the top large school lineman or linebacker in Kansas City, and Wildcat junior wide receiver Darrius Shepherd was a finalist for the Otis Taylor Award as the top receiver but lost out to Craig Scott of Park Hill South. Maliek Collins of Center won the Bobby Bell Award as the top small school lineman or linebacker and Holden's Max Mickey, who set a state single-season rushing record, won the Fontana Award as the top small school player.
Warmack is just the second junior to win the Simone Award, joining Rockhurst’s Nathan Scheelhaase (2007), who was the keynote speaker at Tuesday’s ceremony.
Warmack rushed for 2,281 yards and a school-record 40 touchdowns for the Class 6 state champion Wildcats. He also set three single-game Blue Springs marks by rushing for 415 yards and six touchdowns, plus a 50-yard catch for his seventh score, in an 84-62 win over Lee’s Summit.
He is the fourth player from Blue Springs to win the Simone Award, but the first since Ladell Betts in 1996. Jeff Handy (1989) and Nate Minnis (1992) are the other Wildcat Simone winners and were at Tuesday’s ceremony.
Warmack added the Simone to his awards as the Missouri Football Coaches Association Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year and the Gatorade Missouri Player of the Year.
