Local officials are asking for more public comment on plans for a regional commuter rail system.
The first two legs of the Kansas City Regional Rapid Rail system would be built in Eastern Jackson County, and a group called Jackson County Commuter Corridors Alternatives Analysis is holding three open houses to present information and take comments. Those three are:
• From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Gamber Center, 4 S.E. Independence Ave., in Lee’s Summit. There will be short presentations at 4:15 and 5:15.
• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Blue Springs South branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library, 2220 S. Missouri 7. Displays will be set up, and residents can leave their comments.
• 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Southeast Community Center, 4201 E. 63rd St., Kansas City. Again, there will be displays and a chance for residents to leave their comments.
These meetings are similar ones held earlier this fall in Independence and elsewhere. Jackson County and other officials are pulling together plans to be forwarded to the federal government around May 2012.
The Regional Rapid Rail system would have six spokes meeting at Union Station. Four would go to Liberty, Kansas City International Airport, the Legends development with Kansas Speedway and other attractions, and to Grandview.
The other two lines would serve Eastern Jackson County, one on the Kansas City Southern line through Independence, Blue Springs and Grain Valley and one on the old Rock Island line though Lee’s Summit. The area has won competitive grants from the federal government to keep fleshing out plans for those two lines and the Grandview line, and officials have said that gives them confidence about winning eventual federal funding to build the system.
