The metro area’s first ozone of the year has been posted for Saturday.

The air quality rating for the day is orange, meaning there’s enough smog and high enough temperatures that people are encouraged to reduce strenuous outdoor activity or schedule those activities for before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Ozone pollution can cause coughing and wheezing, and it can make breathing difficult. In addition, those who have breathing or heart problems are encouraged to keep medicines nearby, and people are urged to check on friends and family with those issues.

To help limit the ozone problem, people are encouraged to put off mowing until the next green Skycast. Also, drivers are asked to avoid fueling their vehicles or at least waiting until after 7 p.m. The fumes released when a car is gassed up mix with sunlight to create ozone. People also are encouraged to bike, carpool or take public transit.

Each day during the warmer months, the Mid-America Regional Council issues a color-coded Skycast, ranging from green (good) and yellow (moderate) to orange and red (alerts). Last year there were nine orange alert days, a little higher than usual. There hasn’t been an red alert day since 2006.
