A Kansas City man has been charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter after police determined he caused a four-car crash Tuesday that killed Ashlie Limbaugh, 33, of Oak Grove.
Jeffrey Jackson, 51, also faces a charge of driving while intoxicated. Jackson lives in the 3800 block of East 72nd Terrace in Kansas City.
Witnesses told Blue Springs police that several vehicles were sitting at a light on northbound Woods Chapel Road just before 3 p.m. Tuesday when a car came up the exit ramp from eastbound Interstate 70 at high speed. He lost control in a right-hand turn and hit Limbaugh’s vehicle, knocking her into the passenger seat.
Witnesses told police that Jackson had tried to flee on foot, but they held him until police arrived. He was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center. According to court records, when police told him that Limbaugh had died and then repeated it, thinking Jackson hadn’t understood, he reportedly said “OK, well let’s get things going then.” Court documents said Jackson’s blood tested positive for benzodiazepines and marijuana.
Other witnesses said prior to the crash, they saw Jackson speeding at an estimated 100 mph on I-70. A passenger in his vehicle, Deborah Williams, was injured in the crash.
She told police that while she was in Lee’s Summit, with Jackson accompanying her, her car wouldn’t start. After Jackson jump started it, he got into the driver’s seat and proceeded to drive erratically. As they sped northward on Missouri 291, Jackson kept saying he was “not afraid to die.”
