A water main break closed all eastbound lanes and westbound lanes of 23rd Street just east of Missouri 291 in Independence on Tuesday.

Officials said the water main was repaired and replaced. Work to repair the road will begin Wednesday morning and 23rd Street between 291 and R.D. Mize Road is expected to be reopened later Wednesday pending approval by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Maintenance supervisor Jim Jackson said the break was just east of where a similar break happened last November. He attributed the break to the age of the pipes and the dry soil beneath the roadway. All lanes of 23rd Street were shut down by the break.
