Helen (Gholson) Byers, 85, of Columbia passed away Monday, April 9, 2018.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 16 at Nilson Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to services on Monday. Pastor John Gillman will officiate. Burial will take place at Columbia Cemetery.

Helen was born July 6, 1932 to Ernest and Adeline (Satterfield) Gholson, both whom preceded her in death.

She married Marvin Byers on Sept. 23, 1950. A few months later, Marvin enlisted in the military and served during the Korean War.

After the war, they had many good years together raising their family, camping and spending time with family and friends. He preceded her in death in 1986.

Helen worked for Sudden Service Cleaners for 27 years and many additional years at University Hospital and Columbia Regional Hospital until her retirement.

She enjoyed watching old western TV shows and movies.

She is survived by one daughter, Debby Thomas (Bill); son, Michael Byers (Dana); three grandchildren, Shelley Perrigo, Sheri Nichols (Doug), and Bethany Kendrick (Justin); four great-grandchildren, Lucas Perrigo, Grace Perrigo, Landon Nichols, and Chase Nichols; and two brothers, William Gholson (Patricia) and Edward Gholson (Connie).

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters; and a brother.
