Homer Smith, 88, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at University of Missouri Hospital.
Friends will be received from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, April 23 at Parker-Millard Funeral Home. Homegoing Celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 24 at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbia, officiated by Reverend Geneva Whittler. A repast will take place after the Homegoing Celebration at the church. Interment will be following at St. Paul Methodist Church Cemetery in New Bloomfield.
He was born Nov. 25, 1929 in Columbia, the son of the late Herman and Lillian (Williams) Smith.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Murray on Jan. 6, 1951. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2003.
Homer was raised on a farm raising cattle and crops. He also worked as a custodian at the University of Missouri.
He was a member of the Log Providence Missionary Baptist Church.
His hobbies include gardening and fishing. He enjoyed watching pro wrestling, old westerns and loved to hunt. He was a wonderful father and grandfather.
He is survived by his children, Homer (Rita) Smith Jr., Wayne Smith, Terry Smith, Marilyn (Richard) Henderson, Herman Smith, Marvin Smith, and Pat Smith, all of Columbia; daughters-in-law, Judy Murray, Gloria Smith, Glenda Grant; brothers: LeRoy Smith, Ernest (Ruby) Smith, Dennis Smith, Harry (Charlene) Smith, and David Williams; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchild-ren; one great-great-grandchild; cousins, nieces, and nephews; his wonderful neighbors and friends, Richard and Robin McDonald.
He was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Murray; sister, Virginia King; brothers, Paul Smith, Albert Smith, and James Smith; and grandson, Balewa Moody.
