Nina Olivia Gowin, 89, of Independence, Mo., passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.

She was born August 7, 1923, in Independence, Mo., to Henry and Golda Goebel. Previous occupations include AT&T operator, Lake City Ammunitions Plant during World War II, Brunson Instruments and retired from the Independence School District. Nina spent her life caring for her brothers, her children and animals.

She is survived by four children, Marla Ann Thompson (Frank), Gary Gowin (Carla), Gina Gowin (Gary Scarborough) and Gayla Gowin-Belk (Donna Masters); seven grandchildren, John and Brent Gowin, John and Katy Thompson, Amy, Laura and Michaella Scarborough; brother, Leonard Goebel (Mary).  She was preceded in death by one son, Mike Gowin; and brother, LeRoy Goebel.

The family requests no flowers. Instead, we ask for contributions to be made in her name to the Independence Animal Shelter, 875 Vista Ave., Independence, MO 64050.
