Walter Samuel Hummel, 65, of Oak Grove, Mo., was born Monday, October 7, 1946, in Champaign, Ill., the son of Chris and Rosalie (Martin) Hummel. He departed this life at 2:08 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012, at his home surrounded with love and family.
He was a United States Navy Veteran proudly serving his country from 1963 to 1969. He served three tours in Vietnam; two on ship and one on land. On February 6, 1971, he was united in marriage to Gayle Dean Richardson in Stover, Mo. Walter owned and operated The G & H Feed Store in Grain Valley; prior to that he managed the McLeroy Station for 17 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118 of Pleasant Hill, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Reformed Church of Christ, Florence, Mo. The following is what Walter wrote and wanted people to know, “I loved God my whole life, I loved my family my whole life, and I loved my country my whole life.”
He is survived by his wife, Gayle, of the home; two daughters, Sara Schlie of Oak Grove, and Tammy McGee and husband, David, of Kansas City; one son, Anthony Hummel of Blue Springs; three grandchildren, Brittany Schlie (and fiancé Tyler Wells) of Oak Grove, Blake Schlie of Oak Grove, and Joseph McGee of Kansas City; his mother, Rosalie Hummel of Oak Grove; three brothers Chris Hummel and wife, Glenna, of Pleasant Hill, John Hummel, and wife, Cindy, of Blue Springs and Tim Hummel and wife, Cheryl, of Butler; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and countless friends around the world. He was preceded in death by his father Chris in 1986.
Funeral services were Monday, May 21, at Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, with Brother Bill Perkey officiating. Graveside military services and interment were at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley, with full military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118-Honor Guard. Casket bearers were Chris Hummel, John Hummel, Johnny Hummel, Scott Hummel, Tim Hummel, Tony Hummel, Joey McGee, Tyler Wells and Roy Roberts.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the VFW Post #3118 - Veterans Welfare Fund or Crossroads Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
