Neva Jo Lewis, 83, Independence, Mo., passed away peacefully on January 24, 2013.

Neva was born to Fred and Verda Finch on August 21, 1929, near Enid, Okla. She was raised in Wellington, Mo., and lived all of her adult life in Independence. In October 1948, Neva married Richard Lewis Jr., who survives her. Neva had been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Independence, and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, music, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her beloved children:  Linda Lewis Becker (Mike), Bow, N.H.; Richard Lewis III (Pam), Blue Springs, Mo.; and Gary Lewis (Linda), Independence, Mo. Other survivors include her special friend, Mildred Petty, with whom Neva Jo shared many special times. Neva also treasured her step-granddaughters, Tammy Simmons and Shelly Hahn; and her great-grandsons, Trey and Trevor Hahn.  

Neva loved animals, and took in many stray cats and dogs, giving them love and compassion. Memorial donations may be made in her name to a local animal shelter or public library of your choice.  

Private family services were held on Jan. 28. Burial was in Wellington City Cemetery.
