Blue Springs, MO —

Russell Underwood completed his fulfilling journey through life at the age of 74 on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Kansas City Hospice House.

In the final days of his journey, he was lovingly surrounded by his devoted wife, Judi, his two sons, Russ and Jay, his daughter Jana, his grandchildren, Tristan, Jason, Kylea, Corey, Allee, his “sweetie pumpkin” Catie, his sons-in-law, Bryan and Dave, and his daughter-in-law, Debi. Russ was joyously greeted into the presence of Christ by his two daughters, Joy and Tammy.

Russ was born on January 10, 1935, in Sweet Springs, Missouri, the son of William and Ruby Underwood. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1952. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served for 22 years. During his time in the military, Russ enjoyed circling both oceans and traveling to such places as Japan, Cuba, Korea and Hawaii. After several tours as a sonarman and oceanographic tech, Russ and his family were stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland and Coos Bay, Oregon. Upon his retirement as a Senior Chief, he and his family returned to Missouri in 1973.
Russ was a gentle and kind man who was an avid history buff, always reading books or watching television programs about historical events. Along with his knowledge of all things history, he also loved music. Music of all kinds was in Russ’ vast collection of records, tapes and CDs, all of which were readily available at a moment’s notice. Russ also had a very personal relationship with his Heavenly Father, one that sustained him through all phases of his life.

Russ’ main passion in life was his family whom he loved unconditionally. He was always willing to give advice, directions or to simply lend a compassionate ear. Russ’ knowledge was endless in many different areas ranging from household repairs, mechanical, and electrical to life in general, which was invaluable to his family when facing any task or life situation, whether small or complex. Russ will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

Russ leaves many stories and memories with his wife of 40 years, Judi Underwood; his children Russell Underwood and wife, Susan, (children: RJ and Christina), Jay Barton and wife, Debi, (children: Jason and Allee), Jana McArthur and husband, Bryan, (children: Corey and Catie), Charlie Underwood (children: Josh and Cassie), Debbie Ulmer; son-in-law Dave Raines; grandchildren, Tristan and Kylea Raines; and great-granddaughter, Addisyn Underwood.

A private family celebration of Russ’ life was held at Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs, Missouri, with burial at Blue Springs Cemetery, on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care at 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, Kansas City, Missouri, 64114. Condolences and memories of Russell may be shared on line at www.meyersfuneralchapel.com
