Support SJR14, the proposed constitutional amendment provides that a citizen has the right to keep and bear arms in defense of their family, in addition to the current rights in defense of home, person and property. The amendment removes language stating that the right to keep and bear arms does not justify the wearing of concealed weapons, and provides that the rights guaranteed under this provision of the Constitution are inalienable. The state of Missouri is obligated to uphold these rights and shall under no circumstances decline to protect against their infringement.
Quotes from David Barton’s, “The Second Amendment: Preserving the Inalienable Right of Individual Self-Protection,” support SJR14:
“Theodore Sedgwick, Revolutionary Soldier, a framer of the Second Amendment in the First Congress: ‘It (is a) chimerical idea to suppose that a country like this could ever be enslaved. How is an army for that purpose to ... subdue a nation of freemen who know how to prize liberty and who have arms in their hands?’”
“Edmund Randolph, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, secretary of state under President George Washington: “A people who ‘mean to’ continue free must be prepared to meet danger in person, not to rely upon the fallacious protection of ... armies.’”
Missouri Constitution (1820) Article 13 Section 3: “... that their right to bear arms, in defense of themselves and of the state, cannot be questioned.”
Call Senator Nieves at 573-751-3678 to ask him to support this bill.
