To the editor:

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, there are some special people who deserve our thanks – our Independence public health heroes. The Metropolitan Healthy Communities Coalition, Research!America, and millions of Americans will be celebrating Monday as Public Health Thank You Day.

All too often we are unfamiliar with our public health professionals who devote their careers to keeping us healthy. These unsung heroes keep our air, food, and water clean and our families safe and healthy through research, services, and public policy actions such as seat belt and clean indoor air laws.

Public health officers make our health and safety top priorities every day. They are the quick responders to health threats like the H1N1 flu and natural disasters like floods and tornadoes. Whether they are developing vaccines or checking water quality, these heroes keep major disasters from becoming catastrophic. They make sure the food you are served in our restaurants is safe.

I trust The Examiner will join Research!America and the MHCC in thanking these public health heroes for the important work they do.
