To the editor:

I have not known Sheila Solon for 20 years. We were not in PTA together; I do not go to her church. Solon did not know me from Adam when I came to her with a concern related to city development. I called her because she was my councilman and I was hoping that she would help.

My husband and I found her to be extremely informed, approachable and supportive. She patiently helped us navigate through the city’s multifarious system and cheerfully found the answers to our many questions. Solon never asked us what she was going to get out of it or questioned if she would be spending her political capital by assisting us.

During this time, Solon discovered that of one the safeguards of landowners rights, the protest petition, was convoluted and buried in the city’s statutes. She undertook the task of rewriting it so that it was streamlined and citizen friendly. It is now easily accessible on the city’s webpage. You no longer have to be an insider to know that it exists or how to utilize it.

I have heard the criticism leveled at Ms. Solon; it is unwarranted. It was her job as the citizen’s representative on the City Council to strive for safe, desirable, and quality neighborhoods. I am sorry that she is no longer my councilman, but I look forward to the day when she’s my representative in Jefferson City. Please join me in voting for Sheila Solon on Tuesday.
