To the editor:

Former Mayor Ron Stewart will be remembered for his many civic efforts, including bringing new businesses and a progressive energy to Independence. He leaves an honorable legacy. I’m fortunate to have known Ron on another level. He was my friend. It was Ron who inspired the confidence in me to become involved in important community efforts. He introduced me to politics, politicians, community leaders, his family, and his friends.

I watched him play his guitar and sing country music with his beloved wife Marilyn on the drums. He drank coffee at my dining room table. He teased my kids a little bit and me a lot. He shared some confidences and stories of growing up poor. He was full of laughter, life, and love. I always thought he was a giant among men. My thoughts and prayers are with Marilyn, his family, and his lifelong friends. I’m going to miss him, too.
